2008 Girls PIAA State Water Polo Champions
The 2008 girls’ water polo team was one of the most dedicated and intense teams at North Penn High School. The team’s drive and dedication led to a Suburban One League title and a PA State Championship. The girls finished the year with a 28 – 2 record and both defeats were in overtime. The team lost in the Beast of the East Championships to Upper Arlington, Ohio, by a score of 7-6, and at the Wilson Invitational with a score of 6-5 in 6 overtimes. However, the girls rebounded a week later and defeated Wilson West Lawn 6-4 to clinch their second State Title in 3 years.
The team was led by Captains Shelby Rinker, Heather Fellmuth, Georgia Simcox and Caley Britton, who kept the team focused throughout the season especially during the grueling morning, afternoon and weekend practices.
Excerpts from the 2008 Accolade
“It is a lot of time and the workouts are really hard but totally worth it” stated Mary Morris. Besides the countless wins, most of the girls can agree that it is the friendships and memories that are the greatest part of being on the Water Polo team. Erin Meingossner admits that the team really “just connects.” Fellow senior Heather Fellmeth, also remarked about the team’s unity saying, “we spend so much time together, so we know each other so well. We are like family and we always keep each other motivated.” Captain, Shelby Rinker would like to remind the underclassmen to “make the most of every day because before you know it your senior year will be here. Don’t forget to work hard and it will pay off, you won’t regret a thing.”
The success of the girls’ water polo program was a direct result of strong leadership by the upperclassman, and it showed once again in 2008.
