Mickey Wetzel Kutzler is honored to be a part of the 2018 North Penn Hall of Fame Class. Mickey was a three-time varsity letter winner in girls’ basketball and student class president in her junior and senior years.  Mickey was dedicated to NPHS as a student-athlete and leader.  In 1991, she was awarded a congressional medal of merit, the Mildred Kratz Reichley Award for excellent school spirit, devotion, loyalty and scholastic achievement as a student-athlete, and the NPHS outstanding senior for her dedication and commitment to the senior class at graduation.

Mickey was the MVP and Co-Captain in 1990 and 1991 of a special maidens’ basketball team coached under Jim Crawford, Jr. Mickey led the maidens team that set new standards for NPHS girls’ basketball with their intimidating defense and scoring power shared across many contributing seniors, finishing the regular 1991 league season with an undefeated record of 24-0 (27-2 overall). During the 1991 regular season, the team averaged an astounding 76 points per game and scored 2,200 total points over the season.  They ended the season as Suburban One League (SOL) Basketball Champions and District One basketball runner-ups.

Mickey finished her senior year with 981 career points over 3 varsity seasons and was named to the 1990 and 1991 First Team SOL Basketball Unanimous Selection.  In her senior season, she was the named the Montgomeryville Spirit Co-Player of the Year and one of the super 10’s, the Intelligencer All-Area Basketball First Team and to the Philadelphia Inquirer All-Southeastern PA girls basketball Second Team.

Mickey earned a full scholarship to Temple University for basketball in 1991 where she was a four-year letter winner.  After suffering a devastating knee injury at the start of her freshman season, she showed great resilience and grit and came back to compete for the Temple Lady Owls from 1991-1996, as a 5th year senior.  She was named Co-captain of the Lady Owls in 1994, 1995, and 1996.  In 1995, she was named to the Philadelphia Big Five Conference All-Academic Team, received the Temple Athletics Owl Club Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, and was a two-time recipient of the Henry R. Sklar Award for academic achievement, leadership and dedication to Temple Athletics.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University in 1995, majoring in Biology with a minor in education. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology at Temple University School of Medicine in 2001.

Mickey currently is the Assistant Dean of Faculty Development and an Associate Professor of Medicine and Microbiology and Immunology at Drexel University College of Medicine.  Mickey is married to fellow Temple alum, David Kutzler, and they have two sons, Evan and Ian, who play basketball and football for Souderton.  Her parents, and biggest supporters, Rick and Barb Wetzel, still reside in Hatfield and continue to follow NPHS and Souderton sports. Mickey is involved in community youth basketball through Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the Souderton Harleysville Youth Basketball Association (SHYBA). She is President of SHYBA, a non-profit organization with over 900 participants that was awarded the 2018 “top 3 Youth Sports Organizations” in Bucks and Montgomery Counties by the Intelligencer.  She enjoys coaching her sons in CYO and SHYBA travel and helps to direct the new SHYBA 6-year-old STARS development basketball program.

Mickey would like to thank NPHS for this honor, as well as Coach Jim Crawford, her basketball teammates, the “Blue Crew” cheering section, her parents, Rick and Barb, and siblings, Mark (NPHS ’86), Missy (NPHS ’89), Marcy (NPHS ’94) and Megan (NPHS ’96) for their support and encouragement during her High School Career.  Congratulations to all of the 2018 HOF inductees!
