North Penn High School, 2002 Adelina N. Gentry is honored to be a part of the 2019, class of inductees to the North Penn Athletic Hall of Fame. Adelina was a 4-time Varsity letter winner in girls’ basketball and 4-year Varsity Starter. She was co-captain in 2001 and 2002. Adelina was very passionate about the game of basketball, so much so, she aspired to play at the next level on a full basketball scholarship. In 2002, she graduated with honors and the next step in her basketball dream journey was fulfilled. In 2002, Adelina joined the Chargers Women’s Basketball team at University of New Haven as a full-scholarship athlete. Off the court, in 2004, she had the pleasure of co-founding the first Christian organization to be recognized in the student body government at UNH. Adelina served as VP for this organization the remainder of her college career at UNH. On the court, Adelina was a 2-time co-captain and helped lead her team to the NCAA DII NYCAC championship—of which she was the MVP of the 2005-06’ championship tournament. Her team went on to make an NCAA DII Regional Quarterfinal appearance. After college, Adelina was blessed to fulfill her dream of playing professional basketball. She did various mission trips with Athletes in Action in the USA and India, which led her to play for the SBL Lightning Team in Perth, Australia in 2007. Perth, Australia is where her coaching career began as she coached camps for boys and girls and travel girls 16under team—while inspiring students as a motivational speaker in junior high and high schools to never give up on their dreams. Adelina was invited to train with the Perth Lynx of the National Women’s Basketball League in Australia, before returning to the states for WNBA camps and agent representation. In 2008-2009, Adelina accepted the girls basketball Head Varsity Coach position at Overhills High School in North Carolina. She led the Jaguars to their first 3A State Championship Tournament appearance, where they competed for two rounds. Coach Gentry was named the Cape Fear Valley Conference coach of the year by her peers, as the team won the regular-season title with a 9-4 conference record. Her Jaguars closed the season with a 20-6 overall record. Gentry became the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Texas A&M University- Commerce in Texas, in 2009-2012. She was an assistant for 3 seasons coaching young ladies to become not only successful basketball players but also to become Women of Victory. Gentry directed camps/clinics, was the recruiting coordinator, Post position coach 2009-2011, guard position coach 2011-2012 and academic advisor. Adelina later pursued a graduate degree and earned a Master of Biblical and Theological Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2018. Today, she enjoys coaching her son, Josiah, in various sports while being an active member in her community. Adelina would like to thank NPHS for this honor, she is grateful to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for such a great experience and opportunity to shine her light. She would also like to thank her parents, Michael and Angelica Gentry for always encouraging her to never stop pursuing the impossible; and her siblings, Michael, Miraya, and Christopher for being such great cheerleaders and team supporters!
