Back to Back
1998 Boys Swim Team
Waking up and looking at the clock to find that it is only 5:00 in the morning was a relief for students. They realized that they were able to go to sleep, unlike Mike McPeak who had to be in the North Penn Natatorium at 5;00 in the morning.
“We have a lot to live up to as North Penn swimmers. We have always been the best,” said senior co-captain McPeak as he rubbed the chlorine out of his eyes. “It all comes down to tradition, practice, and coaching.”
Despite the tradition of swimming naked in the dark being broken by some unknown natural forces, the boys decided to go out and win their second straight PIAA STATE Swimming and Diving Championship.
A key component to their second straight State Championship was Steve Bohner. After his second place finish in last year’s State meet, Steve was determined to improve on that outstanding feat. This year was a completely different story. Going into this year’s meet as the favorite, Steve withstood the pressure and brought home thee State diving title. Steve broke the twenty year old State recorded of 532.4 with his own score of 541.60.
“This year all I wanted to do was win!” said senior diver and co-captain Steve Bohner. “I not only wanted to win for me but for the whole team.”
While Steve was busy breaking records the swim team was doing just the same. Many records were broken including the 100 Breaststroke by Dominic Szabo and the 200 Medley Relay by Steve Fleming, Szabo, Chris Craig, and McPeak.
This year’s boys swim team was arguably the best in school’s history. There are only good things to come in the future of boys swimming at North Penn. Hopefully next year’s title will be Back to Back!
