The 1951 football team had a very successful season. Although the Huskies did not take the Bux Mont championship, they did manage to battle to a second place tie with Upper Moreland.
The Huskies, led this year by Co-captains Lou Farina and Wes Kingsbauer, were again coached by Ken Poust with Russ Fisher and John Vinski as his assistants.
An unpredictable schedule was in store for the team. After the first game resulted in a 0-7 set back from a non-league Pottstown team, Lansdale students still weren’t sure about the ‘51 season. However. little doubt was left in anyone’s mind when the following week Lansdale drew a 7-7 tie with Ambler. For his outstanding lineplay, the “Rec” donated a fine trophy to Dick Cliver as player of the week.
For their second league game the Huskies took on the “Twin-towners” from Sell Perk. This time it was a Lansdale victory as “Tex” Kingsbauer ran wild scoring thirteen points in the 19-0 battle. This fine showmanship won for “Tex” the “Rec” award.
Springfield followed, and like Ambler played a hard fought 7-7 tie. Dick Dieley was picked as the game’s outstanding performer as the unbeaten Huskies rolled on to meet undefeated Hatboro. Led by Lou Farina and Don Fryling, the Lansdale eleven romped to a 25-6 triumph.
Their second non-league game came against East Greenville and for the third time in six starts, the battle ended in a tie. This time it was scoreless. F rank Koehler. the dominant figure in our forward line, won the little trophy for that game.
Lansdale invaded Willow Grove the following week, but much to the team’s sorrow the Golden Bears of Upper Moreland topped the invaders 6-12. It was Art Trongone’s turn to capture the “Rec” award.
The Huskies then returned home to meet Souderton. With little opposition. “Tex” again made a runaway out of the affair scalping the Indians 47-0.
The turkey-day annual game was truly a classic. Each team was keyed up for the big affair, but the Hornets’ sting wasn’t as bad as the Huskies’ bite. Lansdale gained its ninth straight series victory. 14-6, as Stan “Buster” Smith matched Fred Schmidt’s trophy of the week before.
Because of a postponement, the Quakertown game was held on the Tuesday following the annual Central Bucks battle. Mighty little Quakertown upset the high flying Huskies 6-13. In the bitter cold Jim Leach pulled a few tricks out of his hat and became the first under classman to win the little monument. This was the ‘51 record: four wins, two losses, and two ties.
“Tex” Kingsbauer. one of the greatest backs to graduate from L.H.S. “copped” top honors in the league’s scoring department with a grand total of ninety-one points. As high scorer and leading ground gainer for Lansdale ‘Tex” had little trouble making the all Bux-Mont: however he was the only Huskie member to make the all league first team. Dick Cliver, center, Fred Schmidt. tackle, and Lou Farina, guard all made the second team.
In addition to the football letters several other awards were presented. Wes Kingsbauer again came forth to receive another trophy, this one for being the most valuable player. The most improved players award went to Fred Schmidt.
The ‘51 Huskies weren’t the greatest team to play for Lansdale and they didn’t accomplish any outstanding record, but they had the spirit and determination to make themselves one of the noblest teams ever to graduate from this high school.
