PAUL ALAMAN
PAUL ALAMANAthlete, North Penn High School, 1970 Football, Basketball, Baseball, Track |
|
Paul reveled in the whole North Penn experience, thriving both athletically and academically. A persistent foot injury limited his athletic success to his first love – football. He was proud to be a member of the Knight’s unit, and still remembers his on field promotion and the coveted red practice jersey of the 1st team defense. In his senior year he was co-captain of the football team and 1st Team All Bux-Mont Defensive end, 2nd Team All Bux-Mont Offensive Tackle and nominated to play in the PA Big 33 All Star game. Paul’s trademarks were his hustle, effort, and discipline. Whether it was excelling in football, or riding the JV bench in basketball and baseball, he strove to be a good teammate, a good friend, and a good student. In the fall of 1970 Paul transitioned to the University of Kentucky where he had received a football scholarship. He was well prepared by the teachers and coaches of North Penn for the challenges ahead. After a very successful freshman season, Paul suffered a career ending neck injury his sophomore year. He never fulfilled his goal of starting in the SEC, but remained a valuable part of the program, and graduated on time with honors. The post college years can best be described in one word, change. Paul has lived in many locales, mostly in the western states, always seeming to gravitate back to Montana. His vocations were varied as well; from factory worker, towboat deckhand, railroad trainmaster, to teacher and coach. In 1983 Paul was given the opportunity to start his own business as a State Farm Insurance Agent in Lansdale. It was here that he finally hit his stride, building a successful agency. Unfortunately in 1994 Paul suffered a stroke, and a year later had to make the difficult decision to retire. The only true constant in Paul’s life has been his wife of 30 plus years, Joni. She has been his partner, confidant, and strength through many ups and downs. It is a good bet the future will find them somewhere out in Big Sky Country doing their best to live life as it unfolds. |

Kerri McIntyre, Erin Slocum and Beth George each placed in the top eight in the 800 meters. Jenae Strader placed 8th in the mile and 4th in the two mile. After capturing the first place in the State Track meet at Shippensburg University, “It is the first time in North Penn history that girls track has ever won States. It just gives me a feeling of accomplishment”, remarked senior Carey Shmihluk.
In addition to being the Pennsylvania State Champs, the Girl’s Track Team won the Suburban One League Championship and District 1 AAA Championship. They successfully completed their dual meet season undefeated.
Many of the track members will be able to look back on their season and feel a sense of pride because they have accomplished something that has never been accomplished before by a girl’s track team. Senior Erin Slocum commented, “This season has most definitely been the most memorable one. We were able to accomplish our individual and team goals.”
The girl’s track team definitely earned all the recognition that they received this season. Winning the State Championship for the first time ever will not be forgotten.
Senior Jenae Strader simply stated, “Finally Mr. Crawford smiled this season and told us that we were the best.”

1996 BOYS WATER POLO TEAM
1996 BOYS WATER POLO TEAM
PIAA State Champion
The 1996 Boys Water Polo season began with much anticipation as the team certainly fielded the strongest cast of players in its brief school's history. Team members realized that they were a strong favorite over league rivals Souderton and Wissahickon and were looking forward to a strong showing in November at the State Tournament.
During the regular season the Knights compiled a 16-4 record. The team cruised through the Eastern Division with an untarnished record leading them to the Division Title. The Knights lost two matches at the prestigious Beast of the East Tournament to Wilson, West Lawn and eastern power, Greenwich, Connecticut. The Knights lost later that week to the Mifflin Mustangs and again in the season to the Bulldogs of Wilson.
The team still believed they had the ability to compete with the best, even though few others felt the same way. The team opened the State Tournament with strong victories including a close semifinal 9-8 victory over the Mifflin Mustangs. Many thought the semifinal was the highlight of the tournament as most water polo supporters had Wilson winning the final game and earning its 10th consecutive State Title. As expected the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead and seemed to be on their way to an easy victory. Then it all began to change, and the Knights were on a roll. When the middle of period three began, the teams were deadlocked at nine a piece. The stands and deck were packed, and the noise in the natatorium was deafening. The atmosphere certainly favored the Knights as most wanted to see the Bulldog's State Title streak end. The fourth period was a nail biter, and with 10 seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs had the ball with a chance to tie. The attempt was blocked, and the natatorium erupted as the Knights seemed to pull the upset that only they thought possible.
When all said and done, many realized that the title was no fluke as the team was loaded with talent. Team captains Steve Johnston and Jeff Faikish earned 2nd Team All American Honors and 5th Team All- American Honors, respectively. Steve and Jeff also received 1st Team All-State Honors. Joining these two on the All State team were Kevin Rader and Eric Umaluf earning 2nd Team All- State Honors and Sylvo Szabo, Mike McPeak and Ryan McGrath earning 3rd Team All- State Honors.
Later that school year the 1996 Boys Swimming Team won the 1996-97 PIAA State Swimming Championship. At the present time, no other North Penn Girls or Boys Water Polo / Swim Team had captured both titles in the same school year.

1997 GIRLS TRACK TEAM
1997 NORTH PENN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK TEAM
Undefeated Suburban One League Champion
District One Champion
PIAA AAA State Champion
Bundles of blue flying around the four hundred meter oval, leaving competitors with nothing but their dust to remember them by, the girls track team ruled. During the ’95 season, the team won its first state title. The feat was celebrated as the team felt that the chances of repeating were slim. Little did anyone know that only two years later, the ’97 Maidens would do just that.
Led by seniors Jessica Franks and Beth George, the only two remaining members of the ’95 team, the ’97 team was dominant early and often. Throughout the regular season, their closest competitor was Truman who scored 51 points to NP’s 90. Devastating all opponents with a balanced attack in all events, the girls won the league championship by beating second place Truman by over one hundred points.
At the Penn Relays, the 4X800m relay team of Tiffany Huff, Cheryl Smith, Jess Franks and Beth George ran the current fastest time in the Nation when they won their heat with a school record 9:08. They finished sixth in the Championship of America. The 400m relay team of Nia Campbell, Cheryl, Jess, and Beth won their hat with a new school record and were fourth in the Philadelphia Area Championship.
The team won the District One title by less than two points. Gold medal winners were the 4X800m relay team and Beth George in the 1600 meters. Jess Franks placed second in the 400 meter, as did Beth in the 800 meters and in the 4X400m relay. Jess Franks also earned third place in the 200 meters. Amaka Eneanya and Yvette Wisher threw discus and shot put respectively to fourth place finishes.
“Winning Districts by such a close margin shows the importance of everyone’s effort,” noted junior Kristen Welsh who competed in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters at Districts.
The season’s grand finale came when the girls won States by one point. Jess Franks was seventh in the 200 meters; the 4X400m relay team ran to a third place finish, and Beth George was third in the 800 meters. State Champions were the 4X800m relay team, Beth in the 1600 meters and Jess in the 400 meters.
“Winning the 400 at states avenged my loss from the week before,” declared Franks. All agreed this was one of the most successful seasons ever.

1998 GIRLS WATER POLO TEAM
1998 GIRLS WATER POLO TEAM
PIAA State Champion
The 1998 girls' water polo team entered the season with high hopes of achieving a longtime goal of the school's program: to be the best team in the state. This team of hard- working, dedicated, and passionate players succeeded, beating state perennial powerhouse, Cumberland Valley, 13-8 in the state championship game.
Throughout the season, the Maidens cruised to a 20-1 regular season record, with their only loss to Cumberland Valley. The Maidens were victorious against all league opponents and named the Southern Division League Champions. The team entered the state qualifier tournament with confidence, and ended the tournament with a first place seed at the state championship tournament after beating Souderton (11-1), Wilson (7-5), and the reigning state champions, Cumberland Valley (5-3).
The Maidens had one goal in their mind, reaching the state championship tournament, but focused on each individual game. The Maidens outscored the Wilson Bulldogs 10-1 to advance to the championship game. Entering the game, Cumberland Valley had one mission: shut down North Penn's two meter offense. The offensive pressure rested solely on the shoulders of the Maiden's perimeter players. It did not take very long for Cumberland Valley to realize the Maidens were up to the task. North Penn jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The rest is history as the North Penn Maidens went on to win their first state championship title, defeating Cumberland Valley, 13-8.
In addition to winning the school's first womens state championship title, several players were awarded with individual accolades. Andrea Umlauf and Laura DiLuigi earned 2nd team All American status, and 5th team All American status, respectively. Denise Labold, Laura DiLuigi, and Andrea Umlauf received 1st team All State honors; Monica Hachen received 2nd team All State honors; and Ashley Jernigan received 3rd team All State honors.
