Hail the 1948 Bux-Mont Football Champions

Lansdale High School. Not since 1937 has a Lansdale football team captured the individual league honors. Capably led by Coach Ken Poust and Assistants Russ Fisher and Ken Whitney, and Co-captains Bill Fretz and Steve Moyer, the Huskies went through two non-league and nine league tilts undefeated. The only other team in Lansdale High history to come close to such a great team was the 1928 eleven.

The newly organized Lansdale Booster Club sent the boys to camp and the results were great. The only thing bad about this was that Steve Moyer was injured and had to stay out of the lineup until the Souderton game. The season was opened at Lansdale as the new lighting system was dedicated and a Booster benefit game was played with Slatington. Conditions paid off as Lansdale won 3 3-6. They then traveled to Berwyn to take on the Tredyffrin-Easttown team. As was the case in the previous contest between the two schools, the game was very close, but Lansdale managed to gain a 19-12 victory.

Lansdale journeyed to Sell-Perk, the following week, to open its league season. The Huskies revealed a great deal of offensive talent as they whitewashed the Twin-towners” 48-0. Next, the Huskies journeyed to Erdenheim. As was expected, the Springfield-Lansdale affair proved to be the game of the year. While trailing, matters were made worse as Pete Hespell was seriously injured. This made the injured quarterback list grow to two and called on sophomore Jim Curley. Showing the ability to come from behind, the Huskies came through in the dying moments to score a 27-20 triumph, and make it the first time in five years that a Lansdale eleven topped Springfield.

Hatboro furnished the opposition as the Huskies returned to play their first league game at home. After a slow start, the home team really began to move, and when the gun sounded ending the game, the scoreboard read Lansdale-45, Hatboro-0. The Little Brown Jug game was staged at Jenkintown and Lansdale retained the valuable piece of pottery for the tenth time in the eleven year history of the game by trouncing the Drakes 46-6. Lansdale took on the much talked of Upper Morelanders at home, and for a while, it seemed as if the Huskies’ forward wall had met its equal. Once again, Lansdale opened up its offense and really poured it on winning 40-0.

A spunky Quakertown team came to Lansdale with one objective—Upset Lansdale! In the game, featured by penalties, the Huskies were too much for the visitors and came through with a 20-0 victory. With high hopes of continuing their winning ways, the Huskies traveled to Souderton for their last away game. The Red and White had hopes of an upset as a thick fog covered the playing field. Dick Albright was the individual star as he scored four touchdowns, including two 90 yard kickoff returns, to lead Lansdale to a 47-7 victory.

The championship was decided the night Lansdale played host to the Trojans from Ambler. Unlike last year, Lady Luck was on our side. After spotting Ambler a 6-0 lead, the Huskies began to move and scored twice to win 14-6 and clinch the Bux-Mont title.

As usual, the pre-game speculation appeared about both Lansdale and Doylestown as the two teams anxiously trained for the annual Thanksgiving Day game. The visitors scored first, but as soon as the second half began, Lansdale’s ground attack took life. Jim Curley scored all three of the touchdowns that followed, and for the sixth straight year, Lansdale was the victor. This time the score was 20-7.

Lansdale placed four men on the All Bux-Mont first team—Tom Nolen, Bill Fretz, ‘Wally Leight, and Dick Albright. Dick Albright was awarded the most valuable player award and Wally Leight received the most improved player award. Once again the Huskies will be led by co-captains. George Leach and Pete Fischer were chosen to lead next year’s team into what we sincerely hope will be another undefeated and championship year.
